Red Handed

What do you eat when you have a fever and a sore throat?
Popsicles!
I tried to give her a yellow one or a green one, but she insisted on the RED one. She also insisted on eating it sideways, and on having paper towels handy to clean up the drips. She did do a good job cleaning the table, but it took me the rest of the day to get all the red out of her hands and arms and legs!

Full Disclosure:
Lilly spiked a pretty high fever (103.8) Thursday night, and it continued on Friday (~101) despite frequent dosing of Tylenol and Motrin. I usually wait it out for a day, but since we we're heading into the weekend we decided to go in and see her doctor. She ate this popsicle and took a nap before we headed to the office. He listened to her chest and looked in her ears, and then took one look in her throat and found the culprit! He said her throat had ulcers, probably viral (this was later confirmed by a negative strep test), and looked really red (hmm, maybe the popsicle played an assisting role there!). So he diagnosed it as hand, foot and mouth, although she hasn't shown any signs of rash on her hands and feet yet. Anyway, it was no wonder she had only been eating liquids and purees with her throat all sore and swollen like that! Poor girl. Good thing kids are so much better at tolerating illness than we adults. The fever broke last night and she already seems in better spirits today, so hopefully she'll be all better by the end of this weekend! Here's to hoping Drew and I avoid this nasty bug!

  1. Reid just got a huge fever today out of the blue. Wonder if it is related? For viral do you give them anything or just wait it out?

    1. Oh no! It might be. The Dr. said that hand, foot, mouth disease is going around. She has a rash all over her legs and arms now, but she started with a sudden fever and she had sores in her mouth and throat. Viral stuff just has to run it's course. Alternate doses of motrin and tylenol for fever and pain. Lilly was feeling great again today!

  2. That is so not fun! We have avoided most of it with Andrew but it is miserable. Hope Lilly feels better soon.
