Summer 2020 was just as strange as the rest of the year. There was none of the usual summer fun, i.e. swimming and vacations and summer camp. But we did spend a lot of time outside, playing in the sprinklers, being together. So it wasn't all bad, just different.
We continued to discover new magical happenings in our yard, starting with the rain of mulberries that fell from the trees lining the west side of our property. We gathered some up to make a cobbler, but left the rest for the deer to enjoy.
I planted herbs, and enjoyed more surprise blooms as all of the annuals and bulbs in the yard made their debuts. I'm especially fond of these lovely pink astilbe.
We enjoyed watching the chipmunks play on the patio, and had frequent visits from our deer friends.
And some foggy mornings, we got to imagine ourselves in the English countryside or the Shire of Middle-Earth.
We explored more of the beautiful and secluded woods and trails in the area.
And the kids drew lots of chalk art at the end of our driveway for passersby to enjoy.
We enjoyed warm summer nights, and caught and released lots of fireflies.
And spent many weekends playing in the sprinklers in the backyard.
We got a new roof! And by "got" I mean "paid a sizeable amount of money for." :)
Drew and the kids built a small fort, as well as some little birdhouses for the yard.
Henry (temporarily) dyed his hair turquoise.
We camped and we biked.
And on the days when all that just wasn't enough, and I really felt like knocking people's hats off, I went in search of the nearest body of water. Which in our case is the beautiful Potomac River.
And just like that, summer came to an end just as it began, and the kids headed back to virtual school, albeit this time better prepared.
