Getting out of Auto

Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera

Confession:
I've had a nice DSLR camera for 2 years, and I don't know how to use it.
Seriously, I've tried to learn some basics, but always ended up feeling lost and giving up. I've been feeling especially guilty about my lack of know-how ever since Drew/my in-laws surprised me with a 50 mm lens for Christmas, so I finally found a really clear and informative tutorial online a couple weeks ago, and in a couple hours I learned SO much. I am hoping to break my Auto/Icon mode habit, and actually use my camera the way it was meant to be used. For now I'm easing myself into deeper waters by using Aperture priority mode (kind of a middle ground between Auto and going completely Manual), and I'm going to start doing some homework, starting with this book that a friend recommended. Wish me luck! Or even better, tell me your favorite photo tricks!

Here are some practice shots of my two favorite subjects. . .
(And documentation of how strong Henry is getting!)

  1. Hooray! You will LOVE that 50 mm. That is ALL I shoot with. I wish we were closer and we could sit down together and talk photography... It's one of my favorite things. :) My best photo advice is to just practice practice practice! Also, the Pioneer Woman has some awesome photography posts that I read right after I got my 50 and that helped a TON. Good luck!
