February: The one with a puppy and a prison

We finished out the month of February with a last minute, but very much needed, trip to San Francisco. We had an awesome time exploring the city, and spending time with Marc and Kelly. And after making it through the trauma of two years of pandemic life, it felt somehow therapeutic to get away on a little adventure together.

We woke up insanely early on Friday morning to catch our flight, so we could be in SF and ready to go by mid-morning. We dropped off our bags at Hotel Caza, and explored the game room while we decided where to go first. Since it was so close, we decided to walk down to Ghiradelli square, because who doesn't need chocolate at 9 am? From there we caught the cable cars up to the Cable Car museum. Unfortunately the museum had just closed for the day due to "weird smells" that had filled the building, so we went in search of breakfast pastries and coffee, before walking down to Chinatown.

Chinatown was so cool. The shops had all kinds of neat things to look at, and we picked up some kumquats, fortune cookies, and dim sum for lunch, which we took to a little park to eat.

After enjoying our food, we caught a cable car down to a fun playground where the kids had a great time on this crazy seesaw like contraption.

Since it was now past noon, we walked back to our hotel to check in to our room and take a short break, before walking Fisherman's Wharf from the Musee Mechanique down to Pier 39. We did a ton of walking this day, and the kids did so well!

At this point we had worked up an appetite again, and Lily really wanted to try rolled ice cream at Magical Ice Cream, so we caught the cable cars back up to Chinatown.

After filling up on ice cream, we headed back to the hotel where Henry and Drew went swimming in the subtly-heated outdoor pool until they were turning blue, and then they showered and we headed to Marc and Kelly's for a delicious pizza dinner to finish out our busy day.

Saturday morning we met back up with Marc and Kelly for a yummy home cooked breakfast, and then caught a ferry out to Alcatraz Island. This was the one thing Drew really wanted to do on this trip, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of our weekend. The ferry ride was beautiful, and the audio tour of Alcatraz was fascinating. Henry got freaked out toward the end, and I had to quickly find an exit and walk him back to the ferry dock. But later in our trip, he and Lily bought a book about all of the documented escape attempts, and they spent hours reading through it and talking about it together. They were so intrigued!

By the time we got back to land, we were all famished, so we walked up to the Ferry Building and had a delicious lunch at Gott's Roadside. After lunch (and soft serve ice cream!), we walked to the Exploratorium. This was another big highlight of our trip, and was so much fun for both the kids and us adults. We spent hours, but could have stayed even longer. There was so much to do and see and touch!

Henry and Marc were brave enough to go swimming again, in the not so warm weather, but the rest of opted not to join them. For dinner, Marc and Kelly picked up Thai food, and brought it over to our hotel to eat together. We ate, and talked, and played arcade games and pool in the gaming area.

Sunday morning we went to breakfast at a delicious breakfast restaurant called Eight AM, right across the street from our hotel. The crepes and waffles were delicious and filling.

We stopped by Boudin to pick up some yummy sourdough bread to take to dinner, and played some more pool at the hotel.

Then we caught a bus out to the Golden Gate Bridge, and Marc and Kelly met us there to snap some photos and take in the view.

For lunch we picked up In and Out, because what would a trip to California be without eating an In and Out burger? Then we walked back to the Joe DiMaggio playground with Marc and Kelly, and even found the energy to hike up the hill to Coit tower. Well, all of us except Henry who feigned being tired, and caught a ride on Marc's back. The views were worth it, though, as was the fun walk back down Greenwich street, the plant and home lined hill on the opposite side.

After another delicious dinner at Marc and Kelly's, it was time to pack up and head back home to PDX in the morning.
A perfect little weekend getaway!

Here are some highlights from the rest of February, including Drew's annual pineapple upside down cake, Valentine's day, and meeting Justin's new puppy, Yumi! Yumi was so cute, and is currently staying with Mike and Liana until she can get all her shots and be moved to Hawaii this summer. :)

And lastly, more pottery, of course . . .
