This December we packed up our house in TX and hit the road, homeless and free. We got to visit lots of cousins and cross off a bucket list visit to the Grand Canyon, all en route to holiday fun in Utah with the Berbert crew.
We wrapped things up in Texas with Lilly's Kindergarten Field Trip to a farm and a Holiday "Moosical."
Then we put everything in boxes and more boxes and even more boxes.
(And seriously contemplated just getting rid of everything.)
Drew moved every one of those boxes (and all our furniture) into a storage unit with his own two arms. Then we took off in the Prius with our clothes, coffee maker and an electric guitar. Because, priorities.
1st stop: The fabulous and affordable Taylor Motel in Van Horn, TX. If you ever find yourself in Van Horn, we highly recommend this place. For real, it was great.
2nd stop: Gilbert, AZ with the Monahans!
Henry found a new best friend in his cousin, Porter, and Lilly was in heaven playing with sweet baby Jane.
Henry begged to stay another day, but we had big plans at a grand canyon, so we piled into the car and headed north. Just north of Phoenix we passed hills covered in cacti, which Lilly claimed were the coolest thing she had ever seen. The pictures don't do it justice.
We made it to the Grand Canyon just after lunch. It was the first time for all of us, and we got to marvel together at the overwhelming expanse and depth. Henry was terrified that we would drop him over the edge. Spoiler Alert: He survived.
As we wound our way out of the park both kids fell asleep, so Drew and I enjoyed breathtaking scenery in peace as we crossed through Northern Arizona into Utah. It was a marvelous 3 hours.
The kids woke up in time for a bathroom break/gas fill-up/dinner. Drew led the kids in aerobic exercises while I waited for our fast food order.
3rd Stop: Ephraim, UT with the Saxeys! We almost stopped when it got dark, but decided to just power through. The fear of hitting a deer was real, and it turned out to be pretty relevant when we narrowly missed running over a newly dead deer on an 80 mph interstate. But we didn't!
After a good night's sleep, we woke up to even more cousin fun! Taking a serious, non-blurry picture of this crew proved to be an impossible feat, but I think these turned out better than planned.
Our stay was over much too quickly, but it was time to head to our final destination. We had only a few more hours to go, so we decided to stop and have some museum fun at Thanksgiving Point on the way.
Last stop: Centerville, UT with the Berbert Grandparents!
